It's not hard to find a sushi place in Victoria - most people have a few they like to frequent - we certainly do. And recently one opened up in (somewhat) our neighbourhood - so when we need a maki-roll-fix - we don't always have to travel far.
Olle Sushi, University Height Mall (where the old Eugene's was, which was the old coffee shop, which was the old....). We learned of Olle from its sister restaurant, Bon Sushi in the Royal Oak Centre (near Country Grocer). And there's a triplet as well - Bon Sushi on Hampshire Road in Oak Bay (near Oak Bay Ave).
Olle adds to its sushi arsenal a Korean side. I do not profess to be an expert in either cuisine (and less so Korean) - but like most of my dining out and this blog - I'm telling you what I liked when I was out.
Three for dinner this time - so we ate family style - starting with an order of agedashi tofu. Very lightly battered tofu cubes, sitting in a nice amount of dashi sauce (dashi, soy & mirin) and sprinkled with bonito flakes. It came out of the kitchen so fast, we had to force ourselves to pause before eating and risking a burnt mouth.
And then another appetizer...
Next up was something off the Korean side of the menu - Yang Nyum chicken wings. These were plump and juicy and tossed in a slighty spicy sauce (i.e.: if you like spicy, this is mild; if you're middle-of-the-road, like me, this is a 6.5/10 on the spice chart). Small order - 11 pieces. We also had to wait to dig into these guys - they were so hot coming out of the kitchen.
And then onto the rolls. We didn't opt for any sashimi or basic rolls this time around, but they have a good selection on their menu (plus the usual Japanese fare). Our selections were (left to right) - spicy tuna, calamari and bulgogi. The spicy tuna is chopped raw tuna mixed with spicy sauce, then rolled in rice/seaweed, then tempura battered/fried and sliced length-wise and cut-up before serving. The calamari roll is loaded with long, thick slices of tempura calamari. Finally, the bulgogi roll is a nice change (and perfect for anyone needing a grazing versus swimming protein in their roll).
We very much enjoy Olle Sushi - we've been a few times for dinner and find them consistent, fast and fresh-tasting. We'll be back, and probably sooner than later, there always seems to be a calamari roll calling our name.
